GUWAHATI: Amid the surge in COVID cases, Assam is looking to ensure uninterrupted supply of oxygen in hospitals by installing two cryogenic tanks to store oxygen at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

The two cryogenic oxygen tanks (reportedly having a total capacity of 40,000 litres) would be inaugurated at GMCH on September 15 or 16, state health minister HImanta Biswa Sarma informed the media here on Saturday.

Of late, there has been an increasing need to provide oxygen for critically ill patients, with the health department apparently worried about running short of it.

“These high-capacity tanks will ensure oxygen supply for 10 days at a stretch before they are refilled. They would go a long way in addressing the rising oxygen needs of hospitals,” he said.

The minister further said that similar tanks would be set up in Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, Silchar Medical College and Hospital and Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.

Sources said that the new tanks will consist of liquid oxygen which will supply oxygen directly to the cabins with a substation regulating the pressure.
