SHILLONG: Urban Affairs Minister Hamlet Dohling, on Thursday, inaugurated a public convenience facility at Jail road in the presence of officials from Shillong Municipal Board (SMB).
Initiated by local MLA Adelbert Nongrum, the facility was sanctioned under the MLA scheme for around Rs 14.73 lakh from Social Urban Works Programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Urban Affairs Minister Dohling expressed surprise over the fact that the locality does not have a public toilet despite being a commercial hub.
The minister said that he would instruct the SMB and Urban Affairs department to upgrade and bring changes in all existing public toilets across the city.
Local MLA Adelbert Nongrum said that the facility was a need of the public. “When we keep ourselves and our surroundings clean, it shows that we respect ourselves and others. And by doing that, we ultimately respect God,” he said.
He said that the public toilet is a long-cherished dream of the people of Jail Road, which has been constructed after a lot of difficulties and hardship. “I am happy that I could complete this long-pending task for the benefit of the general public of the entire area,” he said.
