SHILLONG: A 62-year-old COVID-19 patient with comorbid conditions has overcome dreaded coronavirus and was discharged from Bethany Hospital here, giving a ray of hope and inspiration to people as the state continues to go through trying times.
In a statement, spokesperson of Bethany Hospital Dr Kyntiewlang Sanmiet, said that the patient has diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, hypothyroidism etc.
Considering that most of the COVID-19 victims in the state were elderly people, the story of this sexagenarian is an inspiration to medical professionals and at the same time a silver lining as COVID-related fatality has crossed 40 in Meghalaya.
“Whenever a patient recovers, it is a proud moment. But, considering his comorbidities, it is inspiring news for all of us. This patient was put on oxygen therapy and other treatment as per protocol. During the course of his stay at the hospital, the patient’s condition improved. Our team of doctors and staff, who were treating him, noticed his will to fight the virus. It is the will that is most important to fight COVID-19. He has set an example that even people with comorbidities can overcome the virus”, Sanmiet said.
Older persons with comorbidities are at a greater risk but it does not mean the battle is lost for them, the official added.
Sanmiet said that the patient is an example of hope.
This example of hope was surely a solace but in the first week of September, a 65-year-old COVID patient, who was suffering from multiple co-morbid conditions, had also emerged a winner in the fight against COVID-19.
The patient, a woman, who had been suffering from fever, pneumonia and severe respiratory distress for a week, was admitted to Nazareth Hospital on August 13 and was tested positive for COVID on admission.
At the hospital, she was diagnosed as having diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but she tested negative on RT-PCR test after 22 days of being admitted to the hospital.
