New EAC chief assumes charge
SHILLONG: Air Marshal Amit Dev took over as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Air Command (EAC) on Thursday, succeeding Air Marshal RD Mathur. According to a statement on Thursday, Dev was commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF on December 29, 1982, as a fighter pilot. “In a distinguished career spanning nearly 38 years, the Air Officer has flown wide variety of fighter and trainer aircrafts in the inventory of IAF. He has a flying experience of more than 2500 hrs, including operational flying on MiG-21 and MiG-27 fighter aircraft,” the statement said.

Educate people on protocols: DC
TURA: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh, on Wednesday suggested religious leaders from Tura to educate people on COVID-19 protocols and ensure maintenance of sanitation and hygiene. The DC said this during a meeting with various religious leaders of the town to discuss on the latest COVID-19 protocols on the opening of places of worship. Harping on the need to follow the directives issued by the government, Singh said that the opening of religious institutions could be a respite for people as they frequent these places for spiritual solace and spiritual. District Maternal and Child Health Officer, Tura Dr. Ivonne M Sangma, during the meeting, talked about the dos and don’ts after the opening of places of worship.

JE vaccination in WGH
TURA: After a much-awaited wait, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh launched the Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccination campaign on Thursday at Sunbeam School, Dobasipara, Tura. Highlighting the importance of the campaign, the DC exhorted people to cooperate and immunise their children between 1 to 15 years of age at selected location in the community level.

Campaign against substance abuse
SHILLONG: As part of its ongoing celebrations of the one-year anniversary of Fit India Movement, the BSF in the city organised a campaign against drug and alcohol abuses on Thursday. The campaign was organised in a bid to raise awareness about the challenges drug and alcohol pose, especially among youths. During the programme, the BSF personnel marched from Umpling till the general area of Nongmynsong, holding placards.

Dry pea, cattle smuggling on the rise
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force (BSF) has hinted on an upsurge of dry pea and cattle smuggling along the Indo-Bangla border. In a statement on Thursday, the BSF said, “The recent huge seizures made by the Border Security Force indicate a sharp increase in smuggling, especially cattle and dry pea.” The BSF said that the personnel seized a whopping 57,100 kg of dry pea worth more than Rs 56 lakh while 511 cattle heads worth more than Rs 79 lakh were seized along the international border. “While dry pea being was being smuggled from Bangladesh to India, cattle was being smuggled from India to Bangladesh,” the statement said. The BSF has also sought cooperation from civil authorities and police so as to curb illegal smuggling.
