SHILLONG: A member of Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong (a conglomeration of traditional heads in Ri Bhoi), CB Syiem, has said that the NH-6 at Nongpoh needs to be revamped, though the earlier suggestions on the same went unheeded.
Speaking to a section of the press on Tuesday, Syiem, former CEM of KHADC, said that the condition of the NH-6 has been bad due to the absence of roadside amenities.
Stating that the drainage system is improper, he said the national highway was not constructed on the basis of scientific method and that it lacks utility corridor.
“We have, many times, suggested the improvement of the national highway but it all fell on deaf ears,” he said. He expressed concern over national highway in Nongpoh lacking a flyover and footpaths.
Syiem said that even the district administration is helpless as the latter has maintained that funds need to be coughed up by the central government.
Despite the Synjuk meeting the officials of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), there were no improvements made on the national highway.
It may be mentioned that the NHAI has shelled out Rs 6.21 crore to carry out works for widening the drainage system, construction of traffic booth and foot-over-bridge at Nongpoh and other stretches of NH-6.
Earlier in the day, the Synjuk paid a courtesy visit to Mawhati MLA, Dasakhiat Lamare, who was recently inducted into the Conrad Sangma-led ministry. It was informed that Rs 80 crore has been sanctioned for the Umsning-Jagiroad project.
