SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday sang their praises of the COVID-19 awareness campaign which was launched by the Centre as part of its fight against the pandemic.
The campaign, Jan Andolan, was launched by the Union government with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ministerial colleagues asking people to follow precautions like wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.
The start of the Jan Andolan (mass movement) campaign comes in view of upcoming festivals, winter season and opening up of the economy, as a lack of adherence to recommended precautions can increase cases of the infection.
Malik, in a message, congratulated the prime minister and expressed his gratitude for the inspirational call for a mass movement against COVID-19.
He said the entire country stands firmly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the fight against coronavirus.
“I am deeply thankful to Hon’ble Prime Minister for taking this decision for early preventive lockdown and other measures which have already saved lakhs of precious lives till date,” Malik said.
He also exhorted people to adhere to the protocols issued by the government.
Meanwhile, Conrad, in his message, said that it is imperative that one and all move forward responsibly, especially at a time when the economic activities continue to gradually reopen.
The launch of the jan andolan campaign by Centre comes at a very crucial time as festive season is at hand, he added.
Referring to Meghalaya’s endeavour to fight against COVID-19, Conrad said the state had realised the importance of COVID-19-appropriate behaviour and adopted the Behavioural Change Management strategy approach in May, possibly making it the first state to have such a mechanism in place.
Hailing the campaign, the chief minister said that he has asked everyone to take the onus upon themselves while following the COVID-appropriate behaviour.
