GUWAHATI: Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has demanded an investigation by an independent team of experts into the reports of “high radiation and explosion” in a uranium effluent tank at Nongbah Jynrin in South West Khasi Hills last month.
The district administration had earlier asserted that no explosion had taken place in the tank at Nongbah Jynrin.
“The report of an explosion from the uranium tank in the village is a matter of great concern for the state. We have seen that the authorities have given a different statement based on the report of the local police who visited the spot after the alarm was sounded,” KHNAM state youth wing president, Thomas Passah, said in a statement issued on Sunday.
“From the video reports, we would suggest that the state government should not take the matter lightly. After more than three decades, rusting of pipes and development of cracks in such constructions cannot be ruled out,” Passah said. “Therefore, the party strongly demands a swift investigation of the matter which should be done by an independent team of experts, including economist Bremley Wanbantei B Lyngdoh,” he added.
Lyngdoh, the founder and CEO of EcoFriend World, after inspecting the site along with KSU leaders and other individuals, had raised alarm, saying that radioactivity at Nongbah Jynrin was very high despite the tanks being repaired recently.
