SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Executive Member in charge of Town Committees, Paul Lyngdoh, informed that the Executive Committee has approved the de-notification of some Town Committees and that the matter will also be placed in the upcoming session.
Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Lyngdoh said that delegations of Town Committee leaders have often met him after they were informed of the census operation 2021.
He informed that there are seven Town Committees which were formed under the then Assam Government under the Town Committee Act, 1960.
In Nongpoh, it was decided to exclude eight villages from the Town Committees while Nongstoin will now have only 10 villages. The others that have been de-notified included Mawkyrwat, Sohiong, Umsning, Mawlai and Mairang.
KHADC CEM Titos Chyne said that such places are categorised as semi-urban if they fall under Town Committees and cannot avail any schemes meant for rural areas.
Lyngdoh said that with the Census 2021, many of the Town Committees will be notified as urban areas while the Centre intends to develop rural areas through the Ministry of Rural Development.
