SHILLONG/: The districts of East Khasi Hills and West Khasi Hills, along with the rest of the country, on Thursday observed the National Disaster Reduction Day.
According to a statement, in East Khasi Hills, the day was observed by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, in a bid to “encourage every citizen to take part in building more disaster-resilient communities and to encourage a culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction.”
As part of the observance, awareness programmes on disaster management and COVID-19 precautionary measures were held for the public and taxi drivers at market areas in Shillong.
The day was also marked by distribution of masks at old-age homes and among market vendors.
“Awareness on disaster preparedness will be aired through FM radio throughout the month. Literature and videos on the dos and don’ts on landslides have been prepared for circulating and sharing with the public,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, in West Khasi Hills, the District Administration and the DDMA, West Khasi Hills, observed the day under the theme ‘Role of the Community on Disaster Preparedness and Migitation’ at DC’s Office Room, Nongstoin.
The event was participated by the headmen and sordar of Nongstoin Town area in the presence of Nongstoin BDO, staff of DC office, DDMO among others.
