MAWKYRWAT: Fourteen years after its closure, the Domiasiat Government LP School in South West Khasi Hills will finally welcome the students with open arms next year.
The Director of Schools, Education and Literacy (DSEL), Ambrose Ch Marak, had informed this to a delegation of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) during a recent meeting in Shillong.
It may be mentioned that the Domiasiat Government LP School was closed down by the government in 2007 after the people of the village opposed the public hearing on uranium mining at Nongbah Jynrin.
The government had also transferred the two teachers of the school to Govt LP schools in Wahkaji and Rangblang.
KSU, SWKH, Education Secretary, Ioanis Hahshah, said the closure of the school has brought about a plethora of issues to the people of Domiasiat village, who have resorted to sending their children to Wahkaji village or Mawkyrwat or, at times, Nongstoin for schooling.
“During the meeting, the Union urged upon the Director to immediately renovate the school building, which is now in a dilapidated condition and to also bring back the assistant teachers who have been transferred to other schools. The Director, on the other hand, has promised to take the matter seriously so that the school can reopen next year,” Hahshah said.
