City girl goes missing
SHILLONG [Nov 10]: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police has informed that one Natasha Begum (16), alias Teizik, resident of Lower Lumparing, Laban, and the daughter of Tarik Alom Laskar, has been missing from her residence since the morning of October 30. According to a police statement, Natasha is 5-feet tall with fair complexion and short hair. She was last seen wearing a maroon kurta, black leggings and purple slippers. She also has a scar on upper toe. Persons who can identify the missing girl can contact 2222214, 2223168 or 9774070078.

Families benefit out of HCL Fund
SHILLONG [Nov 10]: Ten families from FS Location Pynthor, Bhoirymbong C&RD Block, have received support under HCL Foundation. Family Strengthening Programme, SOS CV Shillong, has ensured implementation of various activities under the HCL Fund. According to a statement, distribution of ration, capacity-building programmes to ensure mental well-being of the ten families were held. Income-generating fund has also been provided to 10 families as part of reviving the existing livelihoods for Rs 15,000. Through HCL Fund, loan waiver of Rs 4,500 has been transferred to respective SHG accounts. The programme has also ensured that 28 children from the 10 families receive tuition support, and under HCL fund, two tutors from the community are engaged.

Order on animal transportation
KHLIEHRIAT [Nov 10]: The District Magistrate of East Jaintia Hills, in an order, informed that all transporter or consigner of livestock will follow the code of practice laid down in accordance with the specification of the Bureau of Indian Standards on the transportation of the livestock. This order comes in pursuance to Rule 125 E of the amended Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 2015. The vehicle should have permanent partitions in it so that the animals are carried individually in each partition, the order said. Vehicles carrying cows and buffaloes should have a partition of two square metres, 2.25 square metres for horses and mares, 0.3 square metres for sheep and goat, 0.6 square metres for pigs and 40 square centimetre for poultry. The motor vehicles meant to carry animals will not be allowed to carry any other goods, the order stated.

Border issues taken up: KSU
SHILLONG [Nov 10]: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) vice president Biangbor Paliar has said that one of the forefront issues taken up by the union is that of border problems. Speaking at a programme to elect new office-bearers of the Lapangap unit under KSU Nartiang circle, Paliar said they have, from time to time, pursued the issue at the chief secretary and the chief minister level. During the programme, Agostan Timung was elected as president, Monbha Pyrpet as vice president, Saikia Sumer as general secretary along with 13 other members.

Int’l interdisciplinary webinar
SHILLONG [Nov 10]: The departments of Russian Studies, French Studies and Linguistics of The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Regional Campus, Shillong, on Monday jointly organised an international interdisciplinary webinar titled ‘Foreign Languages, Cultures, and Pedagogy: Currents and Cross-Currents’. Probal Dasgupta, president of The Akademio de Esperanto, who was invited as the speaker during the programme, spoke on ‘Why Esperanto is here to stay’. He highlighted the importance of learning Esperanto as a first step before learning another foreign language. The second speaker, Prof V Ganeshan, former vice chancellor of CIEFL deliberated on ‘Translation and Multilingual Competence: The Indian Tradition and Experience’.
