NONGSTOIN, Nov 20: In a bid to encourage poultry farming in West Khasi Hills, the Poultry Farmers Association of Nongstoin has decided put a halt on the import of chickens from outside the district.
Talking to reporters, Secretary of the Association, Chesterwell Kharbani, said the Association took the decision in order to stop the flow of chickens from outside the district as it has badly affected the local poultry farmers.
He added that most of the local suppliers prefer to buy chickens from outside, claiming that its price is much cheaper.
Alleging that the sale of local chicken has seen a drop due to the import of chickens from outside the district, Kharbani said buying of chickens from local farmers will encourage poultry farming in the district
He also urged the suppliers to stop importing chicken from outside as long as the local products are available.
