SHILLONG, Nov 27: COVID-19 has hit the hospitality sector in Meghalaya comparatively harder than others as the revenue generation from GST collection has seen a decline during the pandemic period so far.
Meghalaya collected a sizeable amount of GST from hotels and restaurants before COVID-19 entering the picture, but now as no tourists are coming in, the GST revenue from the Hospitality sector has dipped comparatively, an official from the Taxation department said.
The government has collected Rs 23.22 crore as GST till November 25 and is expected to get its share of Integrated Goods and Services Tax by Saturday, the official informed.
GST collection from the retail sector has also been adversely affected in the recent past. GST collection is however slightly picking up as more and more economic activities are allowed to restart, he reassured.
The official also asserted that the GST collection is picking up but the state is yet to achieve its full potential as far as collecting GST is concerned.
Earlier this month, the Centre had released Rs 6,000 crore as second tranche to states including Meghalaya and Assam as their GST compensation cess shortfall under a special borrowing window.
