SHILLONG, Jan 4: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Monday informed that the High Level Committee (HLC), appointed to find a permanent solution to the Harijan Colony imbroglio, will meet to discuss and submit its report to the state government after the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Hima Mylliem and the state government complete signing of an agreement.
The deputy chief minister, however, did not give a specific time frame as to when it will be done.
On the delay of the HLC to submit its final recommendations to the state government, Tynsong said that the issue is decades old and they are looking for a permanent solution and not a quick fix solution to the issue.
He said that there are a lot of issues involved from ownership of the plot to others and they are working on it day in and out to resolve it.
But the delay has gotten the pressure groups’ goat, and they have started questioning the HLC in submitting its report.
The Opposition Congress too had decried the delay by the Committee in submitting its final report to the state government.
Requesting all the stakeholders involved to have patience, Tynsong said that the report will be submitted soon as and when it is ready.
The Meghalaya government had set up the HLC over two years ago for a solution to the issue of relocating the Harijan Colony settlers.
The demand for relocation gained momentum after an altercation in the colony in June, 2018, spiralled into a violent unrest that paralysed life in the area for days.
The residents of the colony continue to live under 24-hour police vigil.
