SHILLONG, Jan 4: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), South Khasi Hills circle, has exhorted the authorities concerned to set up check gates so as to avert any untoward incident in Sohra while, at the same time, also ensuring that tourism there remains undisturbed.
Speaking to the media persons on Monday after meeting the SDO (Civil) Sohra, president of the circle, Reebokstar Diengdoh, said the union has accentuated the need of check gates in Mawkdok or Umtyngar to keep a tab on the entry of both locals and non-locals.
He said the plea came in the wake of reports of alleged assault of four KSU members and one youth from Umphyrnai on January 1 and 2 respectively.
He added that the incidents had taken place at Dainthlen, Sohra.
Diengdoh said the Union was informed by the officer in charge of Sohra that out of the eight miscreants, who had reportedly attacked the KSU members, six have been nabbed and have been placed under judicial custody.
“We are not against people from outside or within the state visiting Sohra. However, we feel that check gates should be maintained and it will be helpful in case any untoward incident occurs and the miscreants are traceable”, he said.
He added that number plates of vehicles, the name of the driver and the number of persons in each vehicle should be registered.
With regard to the setting up of check gates, the SDO has assured that the matter will be relayed to the higher authorities.
Meanwhile, Diengdoh has also warned against creating nuisance.
