Ban on smoking in public places in Ri Bhoi

NONGPOH, Jan 15: The District Magistrate of Ri Bhoi, in an order issued here on Friday, prohibited smoking in public places across the district.
Also, in view of the vendors and other shop keepers selling tobacco products to minors at market places and within the proximity of educational institutes openly, the district magistrate has also banned sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products persons less than 18 years of age and within a radius of 100 yards of any educational institution, the order added.
In addition, the district magistrate also directed all heads of departments, managers, principals etc, to display a ‘No Smoking’ signage in their respective offices or premises, while vendors and other shopkeepers selling tobacco products are to display a notice with a warning – ‘Sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to a person under the age of eighteen years is strictly prohibited and is punishable offence’.
