SHILLONG, Feb 3: The Maitshaprang Movement (MSM) has urged Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong to ensure that Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012 is effectively implemented in the state.
Chairman of MSM, Michael Syiem, in a petition to the deputy chief minister, said that the objective of the Act is to address the increasing number of broken marriages in the state where many women with children are abandoned by their respective husbands without being provided any child support in the absence of a law for compulsory registration of marriages.
Syiem said that when the law was in the drafting stage, the Law department had invited all concerned stakeholders to place forth their views and suggestions, thereby resulting in the inclusion of this very important clause that every married couple has to compulsorily furnish a marriage certificate for all official purposes irrespective of whether they are government employees or not.
