Assam, Meghalaya officials agree to intensify crossborder vigil

NONGPOH, Feb 5: Officials from Meghalaya and Assam have resolved to work in tandem as well as take measures to maintain the status quo along the areas in Assam-Meghalaya border, especially at a time when the Assembly elections in Assam are drawing near.
The decision was taken during a meeting on Friday at MeECL Inspection Bungalow, Byrnihat.
According to a statement, the meeting was held to confer about matters pertaining to the Assembly polls and also to ensure peace, tranquility and harmony along the interstate border areas during the election time.
The meeting was attended by Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup District (Rural) Kailash Kartik, as well as the superintendents of police (SPs) from the three districts.
“During the meeting, a decision was taken by both the governments to conduct joint patrolling by police personnel with an aim to prevent interstate border criminal activities,” the statement said.
“It was also decided to discuss and inform each other before taking up any developmental projects on the border and disputed areas and no unilateral action must be taken along the disputed border areas that could vitiate peace or create misunderstanding between the two states,” it added.
