Russia clinch maiden ATP Cup title
MELBOURNE, Feb 7: A dominating performance from Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev helped Russia crush Italy 2-0 on Sunday to win their maiden ATP Cup title. Medvedev defeated Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted 79 minutes to cap a near-perfect singles performance by his country shortly after Rublev overpowered Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match in just 61 minutes. Ibrahimovic nets 500th club goal
Milan, Feb 7: Zlatan Ibrahimovic took his tally to more than 500 club goals as he scored twice to help AC Milan beat Crotone 4-0 and move back top of the Serie A standings on Sunday. Ibrahimovic fired Milan ahead in the 30th minute with his 500th club goal and extended that tally in the second half. Ante Rebic scored two goals in less than a minute shortly after. Milan moves two points above second-place Inter Milan, which won 2-0 at Fiorentina on Friday. (AP)
Racer found overage, medal stripped
Guwahati, Feb 7: Haryana race walker Paramdeep Mor was on Sunday stripped off his silver medal after he was found to be overage in the National Junior Athletics Championships here. Mor won silver medal in the 10km race walk event in the boys’ under-20 category with a time of 41:19.87 but was later found to be overage in the medical test. (PTI)
Jehan wins Race 3, 2nd in Asian F3
Abu Dhabi, Feb 7: Indian racer Jehan Daruvala ended round 3 of the Formula 3 Asian Championship with an emphatic win from pole position here on Sunday, pushing himself up to the second spot in the points table. Each racer is allowed to use two sets of tyres per weekend. Jehan had kept aside his fresh set of tyres for the last race of the weekend. Guanyu Zhou from China was expected to be on a similar strategy, starting second. (PTI)
Nadal bothered by back injury
Melbourne, Feb 7: Back soreness is still bothering Rafael Nadal as he prepares for the Australian Open. The No. 2-ranked Nadal likes everything to line up perfectly, and he admitted on the eve of the year’s first major “the whole positive feelings that I had” last week after coming out of 14-day quarantine “now disappeared a little bit.” Nadal is trying to win his 21st Grand Slam singles title, which would give him sole ownership of the men’s record. He equaled Roger Federer on 20 last October when he won at Roland Garros, his 13th French Open title. (PTI)
