TURA, Feb 8: A gang of four young criminals behind the theft of a motorcycle from Williamnagar town in East Garo Hills was nabbed by South Garo Hills police at Baghmara town while they were on the way to push it across the international border into Bangladesh for a tidy sum on Sunday morning.
Baghmara police were conducting a naka checking of vehicles on Sunday morning, following a report of a missing motorcycle from East Garo Hills, when they intercepted the stolen two wheeler that was attempting to cross the Baghmara bridge towards the border area.
“Information from a source indicated that an attempt would be made to take a stolen two wheeler across the border. So we set up naka checking in which the bike and the thieves were intercepted on Sunday morning,” informed South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Priyanshu Pandey in a statement.
The owner of the motorcycle, Simreng Ch Momin of Nokil Awe locality in Williamnagar had found that his two wheeler (ML07 B 3848) had gone missing during the night and quickly filed a police complaint on Sunday morning.
A quick response from police in both districts put paid to the criminals’ game plan.
Among the four arrested three belong to North Garo Hills district. They are Chusrang R Marak of Mendipathar, Bapudup Rabha of Dainadubi and Bolong G Momin of Damra Tengasot. The fourth criminal has been identified as Wonder N Marak of Rongara Bolgisi gittim under Rongara block of South Garo Hills.
East Garo Hills police chief Bruno A Sangma said that all four accused have been transferred to Williamnagar police and a court has remanded them to four days of police custody. Police believe the arrested criminals will be able to spill the beans on recent cases of car and bike lifting in the Garo Hills.
