TURA, Feb 10: West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh has laid stress on the need for citizenry to conserve water and focus on rainwater harvesting.
Singh emphasised this during the district-level launch of an awareness campaign — ‘Catch the Rain – Where it Falls, When it Falls’ — in Tura on Wednesday.
The programme was organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NKYS), West Garo Hills, in collaboration with the National Water Mission, Ministry of Jal Shakti Abhiyan.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, the DC said that people here are subjected to water woes despite the region receiving a good amount of rainfall during monsoons.
“This could have been avoided if rainwater harvesting is done,” the DC said, adding that massive plantation activities in and around the water sources and catchment areas need to be done in order to conserve water sources.
Meanwhile, District Youth Officer, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Anwesha Bhattacharya, highlighted the aims and objectives of the campaign and informed that as per the preparatory phase of Jal Shakti Abhiyan, the Ministry has involved NKYS to undertake this awareness building campaign through various IEC activities which include education and motivational programmes, mass awareness campaigns, knowledge competitions among others.
Bhattacharya informed that the suggested activities of the campaign is to store rainwater by making water harvesting pits, rooftop rainwater harvesting structures, repairing of traditional water harvesting structures like wells.
Earlier during the function, the DC along with other officials unveiled the posters and IEC materials pertaining to ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign.
