Sensitisation for EJH police officials
KHLIEHRIAT, Feb 12: A sensitisation programme for inspectors in charge and investigating officers of East Jaintia Hills Police was organised at the Conference Hall of the Office of the Superintendent of Police in East Jaintia Hills District. Oganised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), East Jaintia Hills, in collaboration with the SP’s Office, the programme was chaired by DS Marbaniang, CJM-cum-Secretary, DLSA. Topics that were discussed during the programme include investigation process, road safety rules as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, importance of setting up legal clinics and support centres in the district and setting up of the Legal Aid Counsel (LAC) Para Legal Volunteers (PLV) in police stations, police outpost and police patrol post to create awareness and assist the public in matters relating to their rights, especially during arrest, besides other legal issues.

EGH school gets ADB-funded infra
TURA, Feb 12: A new building of the Greenyard Higher Secondary school in Williamnagar was on Friday inaugurated by Williamnagar MLA, Marcuise N Marak, in the presence of the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, district officials and other dignitaries. The infrastructure has been funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under its ‘Support Human Capital Development’ project. Addressing a gathering of students, teachers and parents after the inauguration of the new building, Marcuise lauded the school for its contribution in the field of education to the district. Referring to two youths from the area who have been successful in clearing the recently conducted MCS mains examination, he lauded the initiatives taken by the DC to motivate the youths from the region to go for competitive examinations and urged him to continue with the same. The MLA also exhorted the teachers to continue shaping the students for a better future. While encouraging the students to crack UPSC civil services examination, the MLA informed the gathering about his initiatives to give a new building to Rongrenggre Govt Higher Secondary School. Tembe, on the other hand, informed the gathering that East Garo Hills is trying to keep at par with other districts in terms of development of educational infrastructure. Others who spoke during the programme include former GHADC Chairman Denang T Sangma, former Williamnagar ADC, PR Marak and school principal, DN Sangma.

Financial literacy event in EKH
SHILLONG, Feb 12: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), organised a field level financial literacy event on the theme “Credit Discipline and Credit from Formal Institutions” at Mawkdok Village, East Khasi Hills, on Friday. The event was a part of the Financial Literacy Week 2021 of the RBI, which was being observed from February 8 to 12 across the country. During the event, officials from RBI, Shillong, gave presentations on various aspects of digital banking such as mobile wallets, internet banking, UPI, USSD etc. Further, the participants were cautioned against various scams and offers received via SMS, E-mails, telephone calls and social networking sites. The participants were also briefed on the procedures for lodging grievances under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme 2006, the Ombudsman Scheme for Non-Banking Financial Companies 2018, the Ombudsman Scheme for Digital Transactions 2019 and the Complaint Management System of RBI. Delivering the keynote address, general manager of RBI Shillong, P Gangte encouraged the people to avail different loan schemes offered by various banks and financial institutions and warned them of the dangers in taking loans from private money lenders, who lend out money at higher interest rates as compared to banks. Speaking on the theme of the programme, he said that people need to follow three important rules to achieve credit discipline. To be smart – to take loans only from formal institutions like banks and registered finance institutions regulated by RBI, To be wise – to borrow only as much as the ability to repay and To be responsible – to ensure that EMIs and dues are paid on time. Also speaking at the event, Additional Deputy Commissioner AS Mukhim stressed the people of the area to open bank accounts, while highlighting its various advantages in order to avail government schemes.
