SHILLONG, Feb 13: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, on Saturday said that the state government, after taking cognizance of the traffic snarls in Anjalee petrol station area, has decided to construct a bypass in the area.
Tynsong announced this during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the construction of the link road from the existing PWD Road via Rilbong Community Hall to Umshyrpi existing PWD Road, Rilbong.
The proposed road project has been recommended at an amount of Rs 4.35 crore by South Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai.
Tynsong, after laying the foundation stone, expressed hope that the proposed link road will help in minimising traffic snarls by at least 35 per cent.
Making it clear that conceiving and constructing the link road is the government’s most important agenda, Tynsong said the state government will now hold frequent talks with the Shillong Cantonment Board. He said there are quite a number of areas where the government wants to build link roads, but they fall under the Cantonment Board.
The deputy minister also informed that the Centre is ready to intervene in order to find a permanent solution to the traffic problems in Shillong.
Pointing out that the area of Anjalee Petrol pump has become a choke point, Tynsong said the government has decided to construct a bypass in the area.
“We are going to sanction it soon and the construction will start soon,” Tynsong said, adding that another project is in the pipeline to construct a road in MES point near Goralane, which will connect directly to Umpling.
Earlier, Shullai said that he has been receiving suggestions from people to have more entry and exit points for Laban areas as there is only one entry and exit point for the entire locality right now. “Our locality has only one entry and exit point where you have to enter from Civil Hospital and exit from Rhino point,” Shullai said, adding that the proposed link road will be very vital.
