SHILLONG, Feb 18: The High Court of Meghalaya has taken cognizance of the fact that nothing substantial has been done for improvement of the Sonapur-Borkhat road in East Jaintia Hills district till date.
The court mentioned that the approval and sanction by the North East Council (NEC) of a detailed project report (DPR) is still awaited, as per the affidavit filed by the Chief Engineer, PWD (Roads), Meghalaya.
However, as per records, on November 20, 2019, on receipt of the proposal from the Public Works Department (PWD), the NEC had forwarded the matter for sanction of necessary budget to the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
Due to the delay by the advocate representing the NEC to take instructions in the matter, the court has directed the Registry to communicate a copy of the order to the Secretary, Ministry of DoNER, along with a copy of its order dated February 9, and the affidavit filed by the Chief Engineer, PWD (Roads), affirmed on 16th February, 2021.
According to the court, this will enable the DoNER Ministry to clarify as to why, till date, nothing substantial has been done for improvement of the Sonapur-Borkhat Road in East Jaintia Hills district, and where exactly the problem lies.
The matter has been scheduled for February 23 for further consideration.
