NONGPOH, Feb 22: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), Ri Bhoi, has alleged that a company, MN Saw Cum Veneer Mills Pvt Ltd, has been employing underage children, and has sought government action against it.
The HANM, after conducting an inspection on Monday at Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP), Umiam, also alleged that many workers are employed with several companies and without any valid documentation.
HANM president, Pateng Marsing, said that the members conducted the inspection after receiving complaints about employees sans legal documents.
Marsing also alleged that MN Saw Cum Veneer Mills Pvt Ltd was engaged in child labour by employing children aged between 15 to 16 years.
The HANM has, meanwhile, demanded of the Labour department to conduct an inspection at the MN Saw Cum Veener Mills Pvt Ltd and take appropriate action against it for blatantly going against the law.
Marsing also maintained that managers from various factories have used the COVID-19 situation to justify non-availability of valid documents with its staff.
The HANM has also demanded of all factories to ensure that their employees possess valid documents, failing which the organisation will resort to actions against them.
