NONGPOH/ TURA, Feb 26: National Science Day was celebrated in Ri Bhoi and two districts of Garo Hills — West Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills — on Friday, two days ahead of the occasion, which falls on a Sunday this year.
In Ri Bhoi, the occasion was observed during a function at the Science Hall, Nongpoh, thematised under ‘Future of Science, Technology & Innovation Impact on Education, Skill & Works’. The programme was attended by Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah as the chief guest and was organised by the District Planning Office in collaboration with the State Council of Science, Technology and Environment.
Four schools from Ri Bhoi – St. Peter’s Hr. Secondary School, Umkadhor, St. Francis School, Umbir, Mynken Hr. Secondary School, Bhoirymbong and Alpha English Hr. Secondary School, Nongpoh – participated in the programme with a presentation and lecture on the theme.
Prize winners of the programme were Alpha English HS School (first), St. Francis School (second) and Mynken Christian HS School (third).
In Tura, the programme, organised on the theme ‘Future of STI-Impact on Education, Skills and Work’, was held at Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School. West Garo Hill DC, Ram Singh, was the chief guest on the occasion.
National Science Day is celebrated annually on February 28 to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian Physicist, CV Raman.
As part of the programme, quiz and debate competitions were organised for students during the daylong programme.
Meanwhile, at Ampati in South West Garo Hills, the National Science Day was celebrated with participation of school students and teachers along with DC Ramakrishna Chitturi as the chief guest.
During the programme, the DC encouraged students to inculcate in them the spirit of enquiry; find out the cause and come up with scientific solutions to make daily life easier for people.
As a part of celebration, an essay competition, on the topic ‘Problems and Opportunities in your Studies during COVID-19 Pandemic’ was organised for school students from across the district.
First and second prize were awarded to Atchisa Deora M Sangma and Dipshika Hajong, respectively, both of St. Claret Sec School, Ampati, while the third prize was awarded to Upendra Koch of Sulguri Deficit Sec School, Ampati. The first and second prize winners will now be competing at the state-level essay competition in Shillong.
