SHILLONG, March 4: Police have arrested one more suspect in connection with the murder of a labourer at St. Xavier’s College in Umoid, South West Khasi Hills District.
Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) GK Iangrai informed that a total of six persons have now been arrested so far. The identity of the arrested person was not revealed.
The police official also informed that investigation was in progress to establish the identities of more people involved in the crime.
20-year-old Raju Mondal was killed and seven others injured when around 15-20 masked men armed with knives and tools attacked them on the night of February 24 while they were sleeping on the St. Xavier’s College campus at Shait-Shait Umoid village, 15 km from Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills district.
All Meghalaya Contractor and Supplier Association (AMC&SA) has condemned the attack on the labourers from Assam at St. Xavier’s College Umoid, South West Khasi Hills.
AMC&SA president BL Nongbri said that this kind of inhuman act should be strongly condemned.
“We are aware that there is a huge shortage of labourers in the state. As local contractors we require the service of the non-tribal labourers from outside the state,” he said.
Nongbri said that they will hold a meeting with the Dorbar Shnong of Shait-Shait Umoid and NGOs to discuss the incident.
