SHILLONG, March 6: The Mahila Congress on Saturday slammed the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) over the sorry state of affairs in the state.
Whilst Power Minister James Sangma is yet to come up with a clarification on the methodology of differentiating between the use of new smart meter systems and old ones, his department head has gone on an overdrive to waive off Rs 104-crore bills of Sai Prakash Alloys Private Limited, a Byrnihat-based firm.
“Our question is, how can the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) chairman-cum-managing director, Arunkumar Kembhavi, waive off an energy bill without consulting the MeECL Board,” Meghalaya Mahila Congress president, Joplin Shylla, said.
“It seems that the state Power minister is unaware of the anomalies in his department,” she added.
Shylla maintained that during the Congress’s rule, such incidents did not take place as officials were made accountable for their actions.
She bewailed that at a time when Meghalaya is afflicted with a plethora of hurdles, the state government seemed to prioritise fielding candidates in poll-bound West Bengal and Assam.
The party also called for a public scrutiny of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led MDA coalition.
“The party calls for a public scrutiny of the MDA. We want to know the status of various state and central schemes in place. We would like to ask why there is a delay in releasing funds in various constituencies,” she said.
