TURA, March 6: A thirteen-year-old boy in North Garo Hills was killed on Thursday night after being allegedly assaulted by a group of men for talking to a girl.
The spine-chilling assault took place at Dingok bazaar, on the national highway connecting Mendal with Paikan in Assam.
The deceased, identified as Mansim G Momin (13) and who hailed from Raja Apal village under Bajengdoba police station, had gone to Dingok bazaar to pick up his father who was on a campaign trail for the upcoming GHADC elections.
“He had gone from Raja Apal to Dingok with another friend in a motorcycle to wait for his father who was campaigning for a political candidate and party when the incident took place,” informed North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Abraham T Sangma.
Momin, while waiting for his father to return, had reportedly struck up a conversation with a girl in the market, which apparently was unwelcomed by the locals. They accosted him and subsequently an altercation broke out, resulting in the minor being assaulted by a group of men armed with lethal weapons including sticks. While his friend succeeded in cheating death, grievously injured Momin, when being rushed to Bajengdoba hospital, he died en route. The men, who perpetrated the assault, have since been on the run.
North Garo Hills, over the years, has been afflicted with an upsurge in such similar incidents where the public have taken the law in their own hands, meting out street justice, right under the nose of the competent authorities.
