SHILLONG, March 10: Taking suo-motu cognizance of the attack on eight labourers from Assam in Umoid village in South West Khasi Hills, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has directed Chief Secretary MS Rao to have the matter enquired into by the concerned Commissioner of Division and to submit a report to the Commission on the steps taken by the state government to apprehend the miscreants.
The Commission also sought to know the measures in place to prevent recurrence of such incidents and the quantum of interim relief proposed to be granted to the family of the deceased and injured persons.
The MHRC reminded the Meghalaya government of its obligation under Article 21 of the Constitution to protect and safeguard the Right to Life and the Right to Livelihood of individuals within the state.
Gratuitous relief
Meanwhile, the MHRC sought an enquiry into the delay in disbursal of gratuitous relief to a victim of fire incident by the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills.
The relief amounted to Rs 1,01,900 was meant to be paid to one Bristil Khriam, victim of a fire incident which happened in November 16, 2017, at her residence at Rngibah, Mawkynrew, East Khasi Hills.
Following the direction from the MHRC, the gratuitous relief, which was pending for nearly three years, was paid to the beneficiary on February 22, 2021.
