SHILLONG/TURA/, March 13: West Garo Hills and East Garo Hills joined the nationwide launch of ‘Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav’ on Friday with the two districts remembering Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma.
In West Garo Hills, Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh along with other officials paid tributes to the freedom fighters, including Meghalaya’s own Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma.
In East Garo Hills, the day was observed at Togan Memorial Park at Chisobibra where the sacrifices of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma were remembered.
Speaking on the occasion, East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, exhorted the citizenry to follow in the footsteps of the freedom fighter to safeguard the nation.
With regard to the infrastructural development of the Togan Memorial Park, Tembe asked the members of Togan Nengminja Memorial Association to submit the proposal.
East Garo Hills Deputy Additional Deputy Commissioner, Aloysius Ch Marak, during the programme, dwelt at length about the significance of ‘Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav’ and recalled the contributions of Togan Nengminja towards India’s struggle for freedom.
Meanwhile, the West Garo Hills DC announced that the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence will be celebrated magnificently next year with the holding of various events.
Singh also informed that a series of events will be organised to mark the Golden Jubilee of Meghalaya attaining statehood.
Observance in Shillong
The Metallica-Sargam Sports & Cultural Club in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Shillong, organised on Friday ‘Neighbourhood Youth Parliament’ thematised on ‘Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav’ to commemorate India’s 75 years of Independence at RB Anupchand Hindi Secondary School, Keating Road.
During the occasion, photo exhibition of freedom fighters and martyrs were on display and were garlanded.
As many as 70 participants took part in the event.
