SHILLONG, March 13: The beauty of the Umiam viewpoint, which is known for its tourist footfall, has started to go to the dogs, all thanks to the unhygienic practices by the tourists and locals alike.
Hygiene has become a major cause of concern at the viewpoint area with people jettisoning their food packets haphazardly. Only on Sunday last, some tourists were seen urinating at the viewpoint area.
Albeit no roadside shops were found open on the day, some people were also seen collecting parking fees from people whose vehicles were parked there.
Earlier, people did not have to pay for parking their vehicles to get a magnificent view of the Umiam Lake.
When contacted about the matter, officials at the Tourism department kept mum.
