State reports fresh COVID death in weeks

SHILLONG, March 20: As COVID-19 cases across the country have started to resurge, triggering apprehensions of a possible second wave, Meghalaya on Saturday, after a weeks-long interval, recorded another COVID-related casualty. On the same day, the East Khasi Hills District Administration has warned people not to lower their COVID guard and has said that failing to wear masks in public places will entail penalty.
According to a statement, 38-year-old Debaris Lyngdoh, who became the fresh victim from the state, hailed from Ri Bhoi and had severe COVID pneumonia coupled with severe sepsis.
Meanwhile, the East Khasi Hills District Administration, through its social media handle, appealed to the public to wear masks at all times in public.
Citing examples of other cities where lockdown has been imposed due to fresh spike in COVID cases, the district administration urged the citizenry to be cautious in order to ensure that no such scenario happens in the state capital. “Be disciplined, wear masks and maintain social distancing. Not wearing masks in public places will be met with fines and penalty,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the district administration has also directed Rangbah Shnongs to create awareness among people to ensure that people adhere to the protocols.
It may be mentioned that India on Saturday reported more than 40,000 new cases, which is the highest single-day rise recorded in 111 days.
