TURA, March 20: In a bid to foster entrepreneurship, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh, has urged the youths from the region to be self-reliant and take up entrepreneurship as a career option rather than depending on government jobs.
Speaking during a national seminar on ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in Tura on Friday, the deputy commissioner said that the dependence on government jobs has become a trend which has led to the rise in unemployment.
The seminar was targeted at students, unemployed youths, start-ups, e-marketing facilities for Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and entrepreneurs under different sectors and skill development institutions from the region.
Organised by the MSME-DI Guwahati in association with the Meghalaya Government’s Commerce and Industry Department, the seminar focussed on employment generation, stimulation of sustainable economic growth, balanced regional growth and community development among others.
Pointing to the issue of unemployment, both at the state and the national level, Singh asserted that it is impractical for the respective governments to provide jobs for all its youths.
“There are many educated youths in the state who are unemployed and are waiting for government jobs. They should instead look for livelihood opportunities and earn some money by becoming entrepreneurs while they can,” the DC advised.
Stating that money was not difficult to come by for hard-working people, he suggested the youths to take up entrepreneurship and avail loans provided by the State Bank of India (SBI).
