MAWKYRWAT, March 25: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Titosstarwell Chyne has said that there is a “huge leakage” of tax as people do not pay the professional tax to the Council’s Tax department.
The KHADC CEM was speaking during the inauguration of the Branch Office of KHADC at Jakrem village in Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills.
While inaugurating the Council branch, constructed at a cost of over Rs 1.60 crore — Rs.1.32 crore sanctioned separately for the building and Rs 22.32 lakh for the footpath and fencing, the CEM urged the Inspector of Tax to ensure that all taxes are collected in view of the leakage in the department.
“There was a huge leakage of tax in the department as people did not pay the professional tax. Therefore, I urge upon the Inspector of Tax and the superintendent to ensure that taxes are collected to enhance the revenue of the Council, which has come down during the previous year due to the pandemic,” the KHADC CEM said.
Speaking during the inaugural programme, Chyne said that the Executive Committee of the KHADC is committed to make other departments of the Council functional in Mawkyrwat, which include Trade and Land departments.
The KHADC CEM said that the Council will also appoint staff to coordinate with the people regarding developmental activities through MDC schemes and will also set up transit branch for people to avail ST certificates and other important documents.
