GUWAHATI,  April 21: The menace of rhino poaching has once again reared its ugly head at the Kaziranga National Park after several months, with the carcass of a male rhino detected near the Xilekhunda Beel (wetland) under Hanuman Camp of Kohora range.

Reports on Wednesday confirmed the incident to be one of poaching. The horn of the rhino was taken away by the poachers, the investigation confirmed.

This is the first poaching incident at Kaziranga National Park in the year and also the first since nine months.

The incident is suspected to have taken place about four days back with sources saying that the site of occurrence was about two kilometers away from Hanuman camp.

“An empty cartridge of .303 rifle was recovered at the crime scene. Postmortem has been done and a bullet injury mark was found on its body. It is a confirmed case of poaching and the first poaching incident of the current year after an interval of nine months,” a source said.
