Plea to keep book stalls functional

SHILLONG/ NONGPOH, April 22: The Education Cell of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has urged East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo, to extract book stalls from the category of non-essential commodities.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, KSU education cell vice-chairman, Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew, said that the Union has made the appeal taking into account the hardships faced by the students due to the closure of book stalls, especially during the time of examination.
Meanwhile, Kharbihkhiew informed that the DC has assured of ensuring that the students are not affected and that book stalls are allowed to function on odd-even basis.

Sawkmie said that he has already written a letter to the Speaker of the Assembly, indicating his desire to continue with his contribution towards the fight against COVID-19.
DC revises COVID-19 restrictions in Ri Bhoi
Following the order issued by the state government to curb the rising number of infections due to COVID-19, the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi has revised restrictions on permitted activities in the district.
Tourists from outside the state are barred to enter the area from April 23 up to May 7. The maximum number of persons allowed in places of worship or during religious/social/private gatherings is decreased to 50% of the seating capacity. Spectators for outdoor sports, cinema halls, hotels, restaurants etc. are only permitted to operate at 50% capacity whereas people are advised to avail home delivery food and takeaway service. Moreover, shops and markets are allowed to open until 9 pm and non-compliance to SOPs including maintenance of physical distancing, mask-wearing and hand hygiene will result in closure of the establishment. The street vendors and hawkers are directed to attentively follow the COVID-19 safety protocols while all restaurants/cafes/food outlets along the National Highway are required to erect barricades and safety barriers in front of their shops to maintain physical distancing.
Furthermore, urgent and unavoidable programmes may be considered only upon application to the office of the Deputy Commissioner.
