Storm in Ri Bhoi injures six, damages houses

NONGPOH, April 22: Cyclonic storms accompanied by heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Ri Bhoi on Thursday evening, reportedly injuring four civilians from Umkynsier village under Jirang Constituency, Ri Bhoi, and two police personnel of the 6th Battalion Camp, Umran Niangbyrnai, besides damaging several houses.
The injured civilians were later shifted to a nearby PHC for treatment.
Official sources informed that Umkynsier village in Jirang has been the worst-affected by the storm. Other affected villages include Warmawsaw, Mawskei Lum, Mawskei Them, Pathardharo and Umiapkhla.
Also, a roof of the school at Umkynsier village was badly damaged by hailstones during the storm. Vegetations and standing crops were also severely affected.
The officials are making an assessment of the damages.
When contacted, Commandant of 6th Battalion Camp, Lakador Syiem, said that the storm hit part of the camp, blowing away the rooftops of a few barracks, while adding that the two personnel who sustained minor injuries were out of danger.
