SHILLONG, May 5: KHNAM state youth wing president, Thomas Passah, on Wednesday expressed his concern saying that the recent surge in COVID-19 cases will put the citizens, especially the daily wage earners, in a difficult situation.
In a statement, Passah alleged that the incapability of the state government to tackle the COVID-19 cases at entry points has led to a stage where complete lockdown and other extreme measures have become unavoidable.
Terming it careless on government’s part, he said that entrants are sent home without test results being declared.Passah further stated that the decision by the government to declare total lockdown for five days is the need of the hour.
“However, the urgent declaration which created panic amongst the people could have been avoided. Immediately after the declaration of lockdown, there has been panic-buying everywhere. This created overcrowding of people which is extremely dangerous. We would have expected the government to send a clear picture of possibility of a complete lockdown rather than ruling it out all this time,” KHNAM state youth president said.
“The government needs to step in to ease the burden of the people during this time of crisis,” Passah said maintaining that patients who are being treated in various hospitals are charged for PPE, gloves, sanitisers and other equipment.
