SHILLONG, May 22: The university units of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have petitioned President Ram Nath Kovind for appointment of full-time vice chancellors in 21 central universities, including North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
In a statement issued here, the ABVP maintained that the central universities either have a vacancy to fill for the post of vice chancellor or have a temporary vice chancellor appointed.
“Due to limited resources for online education, most students and teachers are confronting a lot of problems. For implementation of the National Education Policy, which was introduced last year, these major universities are expected to assume a leading role in its further and productive implementation. Thus, it is imperative that the full-time appointments to the post of the vice chancellor in central universities are made at the earliest, which shall make the decision-making process in these universities smoother and organised,” the ABVP stated.
It also touched on the issue of the pending appointment of vice chancellors in the central universities in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Meghalaya. In Manipur, the ABVP said, the appointment has not been made despite the conducting of interviews in August last year.
“Absence of a full-time vice chancellor for more than a year in some central universities is a matter of grave concern. The vice chancellor plays a major role in academic and administrative activities in the university. ABVP’s units in central universities have written to the President, demanding quick appointments to the posts of the vice chancellor. We hope that the central government will take cognizance of this subject and ensure appointments to the vacant posts at the earliest,” the ABVP said.
