Police advisory on targeting victims of crimes

SHILLONG, June 9: The Meghalaya Police has issued an advisory for public against “denigrating, blaming and shaming” victims of crimes against women and children on social media platforms.
Several groups on social media including WhatsApp have been actively engaging in circulating information about the victims which is tantamount to violation of law, the police said in a statement issued here on Tuesday.
“In view of the same, netizen sare requested to refrain from posting, commenting, circulating information or disclosing the identity of the victim, besides shaming or blaming them. Stringent action as per relevant sections of law will be taken against any person/group admins found violating the law,” the police said.
