SHILLONG, June 18: Medical practitioners in the state under the banner of IMA Meghalaya Chapter, on Friday, participated in the national protest day called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to protest instances of assaults on medical professionals in Assam and other parts of the country.
The protest was held in various government and private hospitals across the state wherein doctors, nurses and paramedical staff wore black badge, shirt/tie to work. Moreover, banners were displayed in various hospitals as a mark of condemnation such attacks.
Member of the IMA Meghalaya Chapter Dr Farrington Ranee said that doctors across the country are protesting against violence against doctors on COVID duty in the last two weeks in Assam, Bihar, West Bengal, New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and many other places.
Terming the alleged assault on the doctors, nurses and medical staff as unfortunate, Ranee informed that mass petitions from various states will be sent to IMA headquarter in New Delhi, which will subsequently be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.
Bethany Hospital’s nodal officer and spokesperson Dr Kyntiewlang Sanmiet has voiced strong opposition to assault of medical professionals.
“This is a profession where we do our best beyond caste, skin colour and language barrier. We just use our professional skills to treat with best of our capacity but not always we succeed because of multiple factors which affect the outcome,” Sanmiet said.
