SHILLONG, June 19: A day after the MDA government skipped a session with the media after a meeting of the Cabinet, Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma on Saturday told the state government to be transparent in its decisions as it revolves around the interest of the people and the state.
“We are proud of the vibrant democracy and the fourth estate media which we have,” Sangma said.
Recalling that the previous government used to have marathon Cabinet meetings and discussions for hours, Mukul pointed out that that media persons would wait patiently despite the thirst, hunger and even when the Secretariat did not have the appropriate facility as desired by all. “We have ensured that we share the information with the press as we share this information for the people of the state and it is incumbent upon the government of the day to ensure that important decisions revolving around the interest of the state is made public with complete transparency,” the Opposition Leader said.
He maintained that giving information to the public through media is an inherent requirement in a democracy, while adding that the incumbent government has deviated from this convention and its social and moral responsibility.
Mukul’s statement comes after the MDA broke the age-old tradition in the state by dodging media persons after a Cabinet meet on Friday.
