SHILLONG, June 26: The members of executive committee (EC) of the MeECL Pensioners’ Association (MPA) have decided to stage a dharna on Monday at the office headquarters of MeECL, Lumjingshai, Shillong, over non-disbursement of pensions for the months of April and May.
A statement from the MPA in this regard informed that the resolution to stage protest was taken during a meeting of the EC on the June 17.
The Association also bemoaned that despite deliberations with the MeECL CMD and Power Minister over the issue, there has been no positive outcome.
“During the course of discussions, the MPA had impressed upon them that majority of the pensioners are depending solely on monthly pension to sustain themselves and families and that the abrupt stoppage of pension, particularly during this time of pandemic, have added more economic hardship, mental agony and distress to the MeECL pensioners’ community who are senior citizens,” the Association said.
During June 17 meeting, the EC also decided to chalk out future agitation programmes “that may spread not only in the State of Meghalaya, but beyond the state wherever MeECL pensioners reside”.
The Association has, meanwhile, also called for timely release of pensions in future and other benefits and entitlements.
