SHILLONG, June 30: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya, on behalf of the traditional chiefs of the village and thousands of farmers under Umsning and Mawhati Assembly constituency living along the 82-km-long Umsning-Jagiroad highway, has asked the Meghalaya government to prioritise the reconstruction of the state highway, which is reportedly in a dilapidated condition for almost a decade.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the local body requested urgent sanction of funds to reconstruct the highway, while also seeking the creation of Mawhati district, which would include Umsning and Umroi constituencies.
Welcoming recent announcement of upgrading Mairang Sub-division into a district, they have pressed for the need to address the ‘backwardness’ of Ri Bhoi. They also highlighted the plight of the locals while seeking medical treatments due to the poor infra.
