SHILLONG, July 6: In a display of valiancy, four young boys on Sunday evening rescued two girls from drowning in Syrlek river near Mookyndeng village, West Jaintia Hills.
The girls — Finie Suchiang (18) and Arkini Suchiang (12) of Mulieh village — had accidentally fallen into the river, while they were playing near the area.
Finie is the youngest sister of Arkini’s mother.
The four rescuers have been identified as Waiphangki Pala (22), Thranglut-o-ki Pala (17), Onyxstone Pala (19) and Kyrpang-i-man Suchiang (19).
Narrating the incident, Waiphangki informed that few of the boys who were swimming in the river had called for help as he was sitting nearby.
Waiphangki jumped in the river to save as struggling Finie, who, when dragged out of the water, told him that her niece had drowned in the river. Following his, the other three dove in the river in search for Arkini.
The boys initially struggled to locate Arkini. However, she was later found lying deep inside the river.
“She (Arkini) was unconscious when we managed to pull her out of the river. We had initially thought she had died. We tried to revive her when we felt her pulses were still there. She became conscious after she vomited,” he said.
The young girl was then shifted to Dr Norman Tunnel Hospital by her kin. “We were told that she has now completely recovered. She will be discharged from the hospital very soon,” he said.
