SHILLONG, July 8: The government has found itself in a tight spot after the announcement of a new district in the state as people’s expectations have swelled of late.
Demands were very recently raised to upgrade Sohra into a district, but joining the chorus with a separate demand is Mawsynram MLA HM Shangpliang, who has called upon Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to create a civil subdivision in Mawsynram.
The Congress MLA, on Thursday, met the chief minister and reminded him about the long-pending demand. Several petitions have also been submitted by local bodies in this regard, he said.
Shangpliang pointed out to the chief minister that the topography and terrain of the area, distance of border areas to the district headquarters in Shillong, besides the poor connectivity in terms of road and communication are key factors causing hindrances, which justify the demand for a civil subdivision.
