SHILLONG, July 9: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has shouldered brusquely aside growing demands for upgrading regions in the state into full-fledged districts, especially after the recent announcement of a new Mairang district.
Reacting to a query, the chief minister said that the state government has constituted a committee headed by the Chief Secretary which is examining all demands for districts.
Outlining the procedure, the chief minister informed that the government is awaiting report from the Chief Secretary and as and when it is submitted, a decision will be taken after scrutiny.
In the limelight of demands for new districts is Sohra, for the upgrade of which, many stakeholders have been clamouring for a long time.
Apart from Sohra, there is a growing demand to upgrade Daddengre in West Garo Hills into a district too.
