Speaker to unveil life-size statue of U Tirot Sing

SHILLONG, July 15: Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh, will unveil a life-size statue of Khasi freedom fighter, U Tirot Sing Syiem, at Madan Mot Tirot, Mairang on his 186th death anniversary.
It may be mentioned that an amount of Rs 60 lakh has been sanctioned for the project besides construction of the gallery and the fencing at Madan Mot Tirot.
The work on the project, which started in 2019, was supposed to be completed in 2020. However, due to the outbreak of COVID and the subsequent lockdown, the completion got delayed.
Portrait to be unveiled
Meanwhile, Arts and Culture Minister, AL Hek, will unveil the portrait of U Tirot Sing Syiem at Synod College. The programme to commemorate the death anniversary of the freedom fighter is being jointly organised by the Arts and Culture department and the college authorities.
The portrait has been designed by Benedict Skhemlang Hynniewta, a Meghalaya-based artist.
