SHILLONG, July 22: A day after the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner’s office terming the call for a rally on July 24 in the city as illegal, an NGO called Awaken India Movement (AIA) Meghalaya Unit has submitted a petition to Deputy Commissioner Isawanada Laloo, seeking her cooperation in holding the peaceful rally from Motphran to Madan Iewrynghep on Saturday from 12 noon to 4 pm. The petition says that the NGO on the occasion of World Wide Democracy Day is planning to hold a peaceful rally to defend the Fundamental and Constitutional Rights of the people.
“We will be addressing the issue of lockdown which are causing socio-economic harm to the masses, forceful vaccination and other related issues,” the AIA said.
Member of the NGO, Banshai Marbaniang, said that they will go ahead with the rally even if the district administration refuses to grant the permission, maintaining that they will not allow anyone to take away the right of choice.
He, however, added that the rally is not anti-government or anti-establishment.
It is worth mentioning here that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Meghalaya on July 24.
